What is an Axle Shaft and how does it work?

Axle shafts or CV shafts are modern drive train components found on many road going vehicles. Their purpose is to transfer the power from the vehicle’s transmission and differential to the wheels so that they can move the vehicle forward. They have flexible greased joint that allows the axle to flex in accordance to the road you are driving on, whether it’s smooth and flat or lumpy and full of potholes.

The grease is used to lubricate the joint and it is covered in a rubber covering / boot to protect it from road debris and dirt. These CV axles are the direct link that transfers the power from the engine to the wheels, and they are subject to high amounts of stress over time and they will eventually wear out and will need to be replaced. A worn out or faltering CV shaft will produce a number of symptoms that will let you know that it needs to be replaced.


Symptoms Of A Bad Axle Shaft

1. You Hear Loud Clicking Noises When Turning

One of the most noticeable and popular symptoms of a faulty CV axle shaft assembly is a very noticeable clicking noise when you’re turning. When Axle Shafts have become worn excessively, the joints will become loose and click when turning. These clicks may sound more pronounced and louder during sharper and faster turns. This sound will be heard on the side of the vehicle that has the bad shaft.

2. Edge Of Tire Has Grease

If you notice grease on the inside edge of your tire or along the undersides of the vehicle, then this might also be a sign of a busted up axle shaft. Normally,this is caused by a torn boot leaking grease, and this grease is now being tossed around while the axle spins. This leaking boot can now eventually lead to CV joint failure, as debris and dirt will now get into the boot and damage the joint.

3. Excessive Vibration When Vehicle Is Being Driven

Another symptom of a bad CV axle is when you notice excessive vibrations from the axle when driving. If an axle shaft or CV joint is damaged in any way, that will affect its balance while it is rotating, causing the shaft to vibrate excessively while the vehicle is being driven. These vibrations will become more pronounced as the speed of the vehicle increases. These vibrations can affect handling of the vehicle and even the general safety of the vehicle will be compromised.
